Tiger Woods has undergone another surgery, his team announced on Friday.
In a statement shared on social media, it was revealed that Woods underwent microdecompression surgery on his lumbar spine to address nerve impingement in his lower back. The procedure, performed by Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi at the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida, was deemed successful.
“The surgery went smoothly, and I’m hopeful this will relieve the back spasms and pain I’ve been dealing with throughout much of the 2024 season,” Woods said in the statement. “I’m looking forward to focusing on my rehabilitation and getting back to normal life activities, including golf.”
Woods competed in five tournaments in 2024: The Genesis Invitational and all four major championships. He withdrew from the Genesis after the first round due to illness, following a round of 72. He made the cut at the Masters, setting a new all-time record, and finished in 60th place. However, he missed the cut at the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and Open Championship.
In 2023, Woods underwent a subtalar fusion procedure to address post-traumatic arthritis caused by a previous talus fracture. His last back surgery took place in January 2021, when he had a microdiscectomy to remove a disc fragment that was causing nerve pain.It is unclear how this latest procedure will impact Woods’ future playing schedule. His next potential appearance is typically at the PNC Championship in December, where he usually plays alongside his son, Charlie. However, the duo has yet to officially commit to the event, scheduled for December 19-22 at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Grande Lakes.
