MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Great Britain failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup Finals after losing to Canada in their final group-stage match on Sunday. Britain needed a 3-0 victory in Manchester to secure their spot, but their hopes were dashed early when Dan Evans lost 6-0, 7-5 to Denis Shapovalov in the opening match.
Felix Auger-Aliassime followed up by defeating Jack Draper 7-6 (8), 7-5, sealing the win for Canada and ending Britain’s chances. Canada and Argentina advanced from Group D, while Finland was also eliminated.
Four groups have been competing across four cities to qualify for the eight-team Finals, which will take place in Malaga, Spain, in November. The top two teams from each group move on.
In Group C, Chile defeated Slovakia in a dead rubber match in Zhuhai, China, as both teams had already been eliminated. The United States and Germany had already secured qualification from the group.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic helped Serbia secure a 3-1 victory over Greece in a World Group 1 tie in Belgrade, ensuring Serbia’s place in next year’s qualifiers. Djokovic teamed up with Hamad Medjedovic for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Aristotelis Thanos and Petros Tsitsipas in the doubles match. On Saturday, Djokovic cruised past Ioannis Xilas 6-0, 6-1 in the singles.
In other news, former world No. 4 and two-time Davis Cup champion Tomas Berdych will replace Jaroslav Navratil as captain of the Czech Republic’s Davis Cup team. Navratil had led the team for nearly two decades, guiding them to titles in 2012 and 2013, with Berdych as a key player.
