Multiple gunshots were fired near the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach on Sunday afternoon while former President Donald Trump was golfing. The Trump campaign confirmed the incident, stating that “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity.”
At 3:25 PM EST, updates suggested that Secret Service agents spotted a shooter in a nearby tree line and returned fire before the suspect fled the scene. It is believed that the gunman, who was reportedly carrying a backpack, a rifle, and a GoPro camera, may have been targeting Trump.
Campaign spokesman Steven Cheung provided a brief statement, saying: “No further details at this time.” The U.S. Secret Service, in collaboration with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is currently investigating what they described as a “protective incident.” They confirmed that the former president was safe and indicated that additional details from local law enforcement would follow.
The shots were fired close to the golf club while Trump was on the course. Members of the Secret Service quickly escorted him to safety. The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office confirmed to *DailyMail.com* that a “person of interest” had been taken into custody following the shooting.
This incident occurs almost exactly two months after a separate assassination attempt on Trump, where he was shot in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13.
The Trump International Golf Club, located just five miles from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, is a frequent spot for Trump when he is not on the campaign trail.
In response to the shooting, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed and expressed relief that Trump was unharmed. The White House confirmed in a statement, “The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team.”
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the United States Secret Service, also commented on the incident, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe.” He added that more details would be provided by local authorities.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) shared that he had spoken with Trump shortly after news of the shooting broke. On X, he posted, “He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country.”
A press conference is expected from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Department to provide further updates on the ongoing investigation into the shooting.
