David Ferrer, the captain of Spain’s Davis Cup team, has confirmed that Rafael Nadal will be considered for a spot on the Spanish team for the 2024 Davis Cup Final 8. This concluding stage of the Davis Cup will take place in Málaga, Spain, once again making Spain the host nation.
In recent years, despite being the home team, Spain has struggled to claim victory in the tournament due to various challenges, including the absence of key players. Both Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal missed the competition previously, which hindered Spain’s chances. For Nadal, now 38 years old, his form has not been at its peak recently, but his potential inclusion in the 2024 squad could still provide a significant morale boost for the team.
While Nadal’s participation remains uncertain, his presence on the team would be invaluable, even if he doesn’t play. The tennis legend has stated that he has no goals for the remainder of 2023, making it unlikely that he will feature prominently on the court. However, Ferrer has had discussions with Nadal and remains open to his involvement in the knockout stage of the Davis Cup, scheduled from November 19 to 24.
“I’ve spoken with Rafa… and why not? There’s still time, and I’ll discuss it with him further. The important thing is that he’s healthy, and if he’s feeling good, he could be part of the team,” Ferrer said.
When asked why Nadal wasn’t included in the current team, Ferrer explained that the former world No. 1 needed time to rest and recover after the Olympics. It simply wasn’t the right moment for him to play. Meanwhile, Alcaraz stepped up to lead the Spanish team, helping them finish top of their group and secure a place in the Final 8.
“It wasn’t his time. He needed rest, to spend time with family, and to recharge. I will assess things and make final decisions on the team after some upcoming tournaments,” Ferrer added.
While Ferrer expressed confidence in his pool of talented players, he admitted that forming the final squad is a challenging task. “The good part is having great players; the tough part is that some will inevitably be left out. But I’ve been extremely happy with how they’ve competed and the fantastic team spirit they’ve shown.”
Alcaraz’s availability for the Davis Cup Final 8 is also uncertain. The event comes immediately after the ATP Finals, and depending on how Alcaraz performs in the year-end championships, he may not be in top condition to compete. Though Italian star Jannik Sinner managed to participate in both events last year, Alcaraz, with his occasional injury concerns, may decide to sit out.
If Alcaraz cannot play, it would significantly weaken Spain’s chances of winning. However, if Nadal steps in, he could still play a heroic role for his country in Málaga.
