After a disappointing summer, Coco Gauff has parted ways with renowned coach Brad Gilbert, who played a key role in her US Open victory last year, as well as other notable achievements.
The contrast between this year and last highlights how Gauff’s career has evolved over the past 12 months. A year ago, the young American was on top of the world, having just claimed her first Grand Slam title. Her victory silenced critics, proving she was living up to her potential. That triumph capped off a fantastic stretch that also included titles in Washington, Cincinnati, and ultimately the US Open.
All of this success unfolded under the guidance of Brad Gilbert, who had joined Gauff’s team shortly before her breakthrough run. Many analysts credited Gilbert for helping turn her season around, leading to speculation about the bright future ahead.
While Gauff has continued to have solid moments since then, her results haven’t quite lived up to the lofty expectations set after her 2023 success. She added a few more trophies to her collection, but not as many as some anticipated. This year, she won the title in Auckland and also claimed the Roland Garros doubles championship. However, her overall game didn’t show the significant improvement many hoped for, and in some ways, her progress seemed to stagnate.
The summer of 2024 proved to be particularly challenging for the 20-year-old. Her performances were a far cry from last year’s, with early exits and visible issues in her game—especially with her serve. A disappointing run at the US Open raised more concerns, as she failed to replicate the form that brought her success the year before.
It became clear that something needed to change. Few expected Gauff to part ways with Gilbert, given his reputation as one of the top coaches in the sport, having worked with some of the biggest names in tennis. Under his guidance, Gauff reached her highest level of play, but the two have now decided to go their separate ways. Gilbert expressed his gratitude for their time together, reflecting on their 14-month partnership.
“Thanks to Coco Gauff and the entire team for an absolutely amazing summer run in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort,” Gilbert said. “Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead. I’m excited for the next chapter in my coaching career.”
Their 14-month collaboration will be remembered as a remarkable period during which Gauff transformed from a player struggling at Wimbledon to one winning major titles just weeks later. Under Gilbert, she reached new heights, including victories at the 2023 Citi Open, the 2023 Cincinnati Open, the 2023 US Open, and the 2024 ASB Classic.
Gauff also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year. However, her inability to match last year’s results during the North American hard-court swing likely prompted the decision to move on from Gilbert.
