Paul McGinley found himself in an awkward moment during Sky Sports Golf’s live coverage of the second round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, when he accidentally dropped an F-bomb, thinking his microphone was off. Unfortunately for McGinley, it wasn’t.
The incident occurred during an introductory clip previewing the high-profile second-round group featuring Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and defending champion Ryan Fox. As inspirational music played over the footage, McGinley was caught on a hot mic saying, “Yeah, Coltart didn’t help, f***ing hell.”

Sky Sports Golf’s lead commentator, Ewen Murray, quickly stepped in to apologize for the slip as the trailer ended. “Sorry for any bad language you heard there,” Murray said, just as the camera focused on McIlroy, Rose, and Fox at the 1st tee.
At the time, McGinley was seated alongside fellow commentator Andrew Coltart. While it’s unclear exactly what McGinley was referencing, it may have been related to an earlier conversation in which they discussed McGinley’s performance at the BMW PGA Championship in 2008, where he tied for the 36-hole lead but had a disappointing weekend.
McGinley had shot 13-under par through 36 holes at the 2008 event, only to falter with a 79 in the third round and a 72 in the final round, finishing tied for 10th. This conversation was sparked by Matt Baldwin matching McGinley’s 36-hole feat earlier in the day. Baldwin, who claimed his first DP World Tour title at the SDC Championship last season, will be hoping to perform better than McGinley did in 2008 as he heads into the weekend with the lead.
Despite the hot mic mishap, golf fans on social media seemed to find the moment amusing. Both McGinley and Coltart are accomplished golfers, with McGinley winning four times on the European Tour and Coltart twice. Both have also represented Europe in the Ryder Cup.
