LIV Golf is rumored to be targeting several high-profile PGA Tour players for a possible move ahead of the 2025 season. Since its inception in 2021, LIV Golf has attracted top golfing talents, offering lucrative contracts and a lighter schedule compared to the PGA Tour. Big names like Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Jon Rahm have already joined the Saudi-backed league. Now, rumors are swirling that more PGA stars could follow suit after the 2024 season wraps up.
LIV Golf’s 2024 season concludes at the Team Championship in Dallas this week, but it’s expected that the offseason will be filled with efforts to lure even more household names from the PGA Tour. Last year, Phil Mickelson revealed that he had spoken to several stars from the PGA and DP World Tours who were interested in making the switch. Following this, players like Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and Adrian Meronk signed with LIV, and more defections could be on the horizon this winter.
Here are some of the top PGA Tour names linked with a move to LIV Golf ahead of 2025:
### Hideki Matsuyama
LIV Golf Investments CEO Greg Norman has made it clear that signing Hideki Matsuyama is a priority. The Japanese golfer, ranked seventh in the Official World Golf Rankings, was publicly targeted by LIV Golf earlier this year. Norman admitted, “We’ve been trying to get Hideki Matsuyama. When he won in L.A., I sent him a message saying, ‘Congratulations, Hideki. I’m proud of you, mate.’”
Matsuyama turned pro in 2013 and has since won ten PGA Tour events, including the 2014 Memorial and the 2021 Masters.
### Adam Scott
Australian golfer Adam Scott has also been linked to LIV Golf, according to reports from Golf Magic. Scott, a major champion and international player, could be on LIV’s radar this winter. However, convincing him to switch might be difficult as he sits on the PGA Tour’s policy board alongside Tiger Woods.
Scott has had a decorated career, with 14 PGA Tour wins, including victories at the 2004 Players Championship, 2006 Tour Championship, and 2020 Genesis Invitational. He also won the 2019 Masters after a dramatic playoff against Angel Cabrera.
### Viktor Hovland
Norwegian golfer Viktor Hovland has been on LIV Golf’s radar for a while. Though he nearly joined LIV earlier this year, Hovland ultimately decided to remain with the PGA Tour, citing concerns about leaving too early in his career.
“At the end of the day, the question is: ‘What’s going to make me a better player?’ In 20 years, I might look back and think LIV Golf would have been a cool opportunity, but right now, I think I’d regret it,” Hovland explained to Golf Monthly. At just 27, Hovland has six PGA Tour wins and a third-place finish at the 2023 PGA Championship.
### Rickie Fowler
Rickie Fowler has been frequently linked with LIV Golf, with rumors suggesting he was offered a substantial sum to join. Despite this, Fowler chose to stay with the PGA Tour, stating, “Joining LIV wasn’t the best choice for me. I’m not playing for a paycheck, I’m playing to compete with the best players in the world.”
Fowler has six PGA Tour wins, including the 2015 Players Championship and the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
### Tony Finau
Tony Finau came close to signing with LIV Golf this year but opted to stay with the PGA Tour for a tenth season. However, with a long offseason ahead, LIV may make another attempt to lure Finau for the 2025 season.
Finau has nine professional wins, six of which are on the PGA Tour. His first came at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open, and his latest was the 2023 Mexico Open. While he’s yet to claim a major title, Finau has had strong finishes, including third place at the 2019 Open Championship and a T3 finish at the 2024 U.S. Open.
### Wyndham Clark
U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark was also considered a potential signing for LIV Golf during the 2024 offseason. Although he decided to remain with the PGA Tour, the 30-year-old golfer from Denver, Colorado, has admitted to meeting with LIV representatives.
“I definitely met with LIV and had those discussions. I wanted to see what they could offer,” Clark revealed. With three PGA Tour wins under his belt, including his victory over Rory McIlroy at the 2023 U.S. Open, it remains to be seen whether LIV will make another move to recruit him this winter.
As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on LIV Golf to see if they can continue to attract some of the biggest names in golf from the PGA Tour.
