Alcaraz Leads Europe to Dramatic Laver Cup Comeback Victory!
Europe pulled off an incredible comeback to win the Laver Cup 13-11, overcoming an 8-4 deficit on the final day in Berlin. Carlos Alcaraz played a pivotal role, securing the victory by defeating Taylor Fritz in straight sets after also winning his doubles match alongside Casper Ruud earlier in the day.
This marks Europe’s fifth Laver Cup win and their first since 2021. The tournament features six of the best men’s players from Europe and the rest of the world in a three-day showdown.
“It’s great, obviously, we came here with a goal – to win the Laver Cup,” Alcaraz said. “We almost lost, but Sascha (Zverev) played great tennis and gave me the chance to clinch it. We’re really happy with everything.”
Zverev, after losing the first set against Frances Tiafoe, came back to win his singles match in a thrilling tie-breaker 6-7(5) 7-5 10-5, claiming three crucial points for Europe. This set the stage for Alcaraz, who delivered a dominant 6-2 7-5 win over Fritz, earning a tournament-record eight points and sealing the victory for Europe.
Alcaraz’s triumph follows a challenging month, where he was knocked out early at both the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. However, he rediscovered his form at the Laver Cup, showing no signs of nerves in his high-stakes matches.
Team Europe’s captain Björn Borg, who will step down from his role along with World captain John McEnroe, praised his team’s resilience. “Four or five hours ago, I thought, ‘We’re not going to win this,’ but the guys came through and played great tennis,” Borg said. “I’m very proud of my team.”
Borg will be succeeded by French Open champion Yannick Noah, while Andre Agassi will take over as Team World’s captain for next year’s competition in San Francisco.
