Abraham Ancer, the talented Mexican golfer, grabbed attention during the 2019 Presidents Cup when he confidently expressed his desire to face Tiger Woods. His wish came true in a much-anticipated showdown.
Ancer, who has since joined the controversial LIV Golf circuit and is not part of the International Team this year, had set his sights on competing against Woods at the event. At the time, Woods, serving as Team USA’s playing captain, was riding high after his 15th major victory at the Masters, making their pairing for the Sunday singles a thrilling matchup.
Before the tournament, Ancer was asked about his preferred opponent for the singles matches in Melbourne, and without hesitation, he replied, “I would like to play against Tiger.” In a twist of fate, he got exactly what he wanted, as the two were drawn to face each other in the first match of the day. However, like many before him, Ancer fell short in his battle against the legendary Woods, losing 3&2, as Woods helped Team USA secure a 16-14 victory on foreign soil.
Reflecting on his performance, Woods said, “I hit it well this week. I was responsible for three points; JT [Justin Thomas] and I got two, and I happened to play well and got Abe today [Ancer]. Abe wanted it, and he got it.”
Ancer’s remarks, which many interpreted as a bold challenge, seemed to have only fueled Woods’ determination. Years later, Ancer explained that his comments were never meant to be boastful but simply expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to compete against a legend.
“When they asked me that at Mayakoba,” Ancer explained, “the question was in Spanish, and the tone wasn’t cocky or challenging. I just thought it would be an incredible experience, and it was. No matter the outcome, I knew I’d grow as a player from being in that situation.”
