Carlos Alcaraz made a candid confession after hearing the news about Jannik Sinner, admitting it was “not really a good sign.” Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, reached a major milestone by winning the elusive Olympic gold medal, securing his 15th significant title. With this achievement, Djokovic’s focus for the remainder of his career will shift to Grand Slam tournaments and representing Serbia, particularly in pursuit of a second Davis Cup trophy.
Last year, Djokovic missed the opportunity to clinch the Davis Cup in Malaga, narrowly losing to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals after holding three match points. Serbia had taken the lead against Italy thanks to Miomir Kecmanovic’s victory over Lorenzo Musetti. Djokovic then faced the in-form Sinner for their third encounter in just 11 days. In a dramatic match, Sinner secured a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory in two hours and 32 minutes, saving match points in the tenth game of the final set and winning three consecutive games to complete the upset.
Djokovic admitted that he frequently reflects on the missed match points, particularly the first one, and what he could have done differently. Sinner remained composed under pressure, ending Djokovic’s 21-match Davis Cup singles winning streak. Despite Djokovic winning four more total points and excelling on both his first and second serves, including firing 12 aces, the Italian ultimately prevailed.
Djokovic will aim for another Davis Cup triumph with Serbia next year. In the match against Sinner, Djokovic raised his game in the second set after losing the first. He broke Sinner twice and won the set convincingly, pushing the match to a decider. Although Djokovic took a 3-1 lead in the final set with a backhand winner and capitalized on Sinner’s double fault, he was unable to close out the match. Sinner’s resilience carried him to victory, keeping Italy’s Davis Cup hopes alive.
