Imagine this: you’re playing in your first-ever Masters at Augusta National, and your playing partner is none other than Tiger Woods.
That’s exactly what Andy Ogletree faced in 2020. Fresh off his U.S. Amateur win, Ogletree found himself grouped with Woods and 2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry for the first two rounds. They started on the 10th hole, with Ogletree doing the hard part—splitting the fairway. Woods also found the short grass, but what came next caught Ogletree completely off guard.
On the *Fairway to Heaven* podcast, Ogletree recalled Woods approaching him after the rain delay that morning. “I could tell he was coming over to say something,” he said. Woods broke the ice with a surprising comment: *“Man, wouldn’t it be fun to get a running start and just slide down this hill?”*
Ogletree, taken aback, burst out laughing. “I was like, *what?!* and just started laughing. It was such a random comment,” he said. After trading some banter back, Woods found it hilarious, and from that moment on, Ogletree said Woods was incredibly nice and chatty throughout the round.
Woods’ caddie, Joe LaCava, also offered advice, helping the group navigate the pressures of playing at Augusta. Ogletree settled into the round, played solid golf, and eventually made the cut, finishing as the low amateur for the tournament.
One of the most unforgettable moments of the 2020 Masters came in the final round when Woods shockingly carded a 10 on the iconic par-3 12th hole. But in typical Tiger fashion, he responded by birdieing five of the last six holes, turning in one of the most remarkable rounds of 76 you’ll ever see at Augusta.
After the tournament, Ogletree reflected on a special moment with Woods. While in a cabin next to Butler Cabin, where players gather with family post-tournament, Ogletree felt a hand on his back. He turned around to see Woods, who congratulated him and asked how his week went. Ogletree admitted he had left a few shots out there but was content. Then he decided to flip the question back to Woods, fully aware of his tough day.
“How’d it go for you?” Ogletree asked.
Woods’ response was priceless: *“Oh, you haven’t heard? I made a 10 on 12.”* Ogletree, pretending to be clueless, asked, *“A 10?!”* Woods then humorously recounted every shot, though Ogletree had already seen it all unfold on TV. Reflecting on the moment, Ogletree laughed at how he accidentally asked Tiger Woods how he made a 10 at Augusta.
It was an unforgettable experience for the young amateur, who not only got to play alongside a legend but also witnessed firsthand Woods’ charm, humility, and humor.
