A recent study reveals that four of the world’s top golfers are among the 15 highest off-field earners in global sports, and it comes as little surprise that Tiger Woods is one of them.
Woods, a 15-time major championship winner, ranks sixth in off-field earnings, with an estimated income of $55 million in 2024. However, he’s not the only golfer pulling in big numbers outside the course—Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Scottie Scheffler also make up golf’s wealthy quartet.
The study, published by OLBG, shows how these top golfers stack up against other athletes in various sports. Leading the list is basketball legend LeBron James, whose off-field earnings are the highest in the world. James is estimated to have earned $80 million off the court in 2024, with a net worth that has now surpassed $1 billion.
Second on the list is Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi, whose off-field earnings are estimated at $70 million. Behind Messi is NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, with $65 million in off-field income. Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and baseball sensation Shohei Ohtani follow, each earning an estimated $60 million from off-field ventures.
Just behind this elite group is Tiger Woods, whose $55 million places him sixth in off-field earnings. Two other basketball stars, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, round out the next spots with $50 million and $45.5 million, respectively.
Rory McIlroy, a key figure in modern golf, comes in just after Durant with an estimated $45 million in off-field earnings for 2024. McIlroy stands out as the only athlete from Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the top 10, a testament to his widespread commercial success. According to the study, McIlroy’s wealth stems from endorsement deals with major brands such as Nike and TaylorMade, as well as ventures in clothing lines and golf course design.
Further down the list, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler are tied for 12th place, each with an estimated $20 million in off-field earnings. These two complete golf’s presence among the sport’s wealthiest stars, highlighting their growing influence both on and off the course.
The only other golfer to make it into the top 50 is Australia’s Cameron Smith, who ranks 40th with an estimated off-field income of $4 million.
For context, Rahm’s total earnings in 2024, including both on-field and off-field income, make him the second-highest earner in sports. The study claims that Rahm raked in $198 million from his performance on the course, leading to a staggering total income of $218 million. The only athlete ahead of Rahm in overall earnings is Ronaldo, whose total income for the year is estimated at $260 million.
The study offers a fascinating look at how golfers, once primarily seen as athletes of the course, are increasingly becoming high-profile figures in the world of sports business and endorsements.
