During the China Open, a photo of Paula Badosa caused controversy after it was posted on social media. In the image, Badosa was seen pulling back the sides of her eyes with chopsticks in hand. This image, shared by her coach Pol Toledo, was part of her highlights from the tournament. Many interpreted the gesture as racist, accusing Badosa of mocking Asian people. Despite Toledo deleting the post, the backlash continued.
In response to the criticism, Badosa tried to clarify the situation on Instagram, stating: “Oh no, please don’t get it that way. Never thought it would be interpreted this way. We weren’t even imitating Asian people. I was just playing around with my face and wrinkles. I love Asia; some of my favorite people are from there, and I have many Asian friends. They are the kindest.”
However, her explanation did not satisfy everyone. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented: “So Paula Badosa is now being casually racist against Chinese people while in China? I’m speechless.”
Amid growing criticism, Badosa issued a formal apology on X: “Hey guys! I’m really sorry. I didn’t know this was offensive. It was my mistake, and I take full responsibility. I’ll learn from this for the future. I hope you understand… I love you all.”
Badosa, a former world number two, has had a challenging year due to injuries but recently reached the semifinals of the China Open, where she lost to Coco Gauff, who later claimed the title. Seeded 14th in the Wuhan Open, she is set to face Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round.
Though considered one of Spain’s top tennis talents, Badosa has faced off-court controversies, including an on-and-off relationship with fellow tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas. She has also been criticized for dividing her attention between tennis and a budding career in fashion and film.
