**Arnold Palmer’s True Feelings Towards Donald Trump Revealed After Lewd Joke at Rally**
Donald Trump recently shared an intimate and rather crude anecdote about legendary golfer Arnold Palmer during a rally at Latrobe Airport, which bears Palmer’s name. Trump, the former president and 2024 Republican candidate, recounted stories about Palmer, who grew up in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and became a seven-time major golf champion. However, despite Trump’s fondness for Palmer, it appears the golfing icon did not share the same sentiment.
During the rally, Trump told the audience about Palmer’s time on the PGA Tour, focusing on a personal story involving Palmer and other professional golfers. “When he took showers with the other pros, they came out saying, ‘Oh my God.’ I had to say it… I had to tell you the shower part because it’s true,” Trump remarked. He then praised Palmer’s rise from a young, talented golfer to a wealthy champion who bought his local golf club and put his father in charge.
Though Trump spoke glowingly about Palmer, a closer look at their relationship reveals that the golfer held a much different view of Trump. Palmer passed away at the age of 87, just weeks before Trump was elected president in 2016. Known for his conservative views, Palmer had forged a friendship with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, with whom he teamed up to win a charity golf event in 1964. However, according to Palmer’s daughter, Peg Palmer, her father’s opinion of Trump soured during the 2016 presidential campaign.
In a 2018 interview with *Sporting News*, Peg Palmer revealed that her father had prior dealings with Trump but “saw a different side of him” during the campaign. She explained that her father valued honesty, humility, and civility—qualities he felt Trump lacked. “My dad didn’t like people who act like they’re better than other people,” Peg said. “He had no patience for people who are dishonest and cheat. My dad was disciplined. He wanted to be a good role model. He was appalled by Trump’s lack of civility and what he began to see as Trump’s lack of character.”
Peg recalled a specific moment from the 2016 campaign when her father watched Trump on television and was deeply disturbed. “My dad made a sound of disgust—like ‘uck’ or ‘ugg’—like he couldn’t believe the arrogance and crudeness of this man who was the nominee of the political party that he believed in,” she said. “Then he said, ‘He’s not as smart as we thought he was.’”
Reflecting on what her father might think of Trump today, Peg Palmer said, “I think he’d cringe.”
The rally wasn’t entirely focused on Palmer, as Trump also brought in former NFL star Antonio Brown to address the crowd. Brown, who made his name as a standout wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, criticized the media and took aim at Kamala Harris’ vice presidential pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Mocking Walz’s nickname “coach,” which he earned from years of coaching high school football and basketball, Brown dismissed him as a real football coach, joking, “He couldn’t guard me.”
Brown’s appearance at the rally drew attention, as the ex-Steelers star likened his rise from being a sixth-round draft pick to Trump’s improbable ascension to the presidency. Brown, who left Pennsylvania in 2018 after being traded to the Raiders, had teased his appearance on social media earlier in the week.
Trump’s weekend in Pennsylvania was packed with campaign stops. Following the rally, Trump was set to man a McDonald’s fry station near Philadelphia, hold a town hall in Lancaster, and attend a Pittsburgh Steelers game in the evening as he focused his efforts on winning the crucial battleground state.
