LIV Golfers Exempt in All Majors for 2025
Since the launch of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league, players who joined it were banned from PGA Tour events, leaving them with limited avenues to earn Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. This lack of ranking points has impacted their qualification for many events, although they are still eligible to compete in the four Major tournaments if they meet specific criteria, primarily through past victories or strong performances.
In the 2025 season, several LIV Golf players will be eligible for the Majors thanks to their achievements. Here’s a look at the LIV Golfers who have secured exemptions across all four Major tournaments for the upcoming season:
1) Jon Rahm
Jon Rahm holds a lifetime exemption at the Masters, owing to his previous victory in the tournament. As the 2024 LIV Individual Champion, Rahm is also exempt from qualification for the U.S. Open until 2031, as well as the Open Championship and PGA Championship until 2028, secured by the five-year exemption granted to Major winners.
2) Cameron Smith
Cameron Smith, winner of the 2021 Open Championship, currently has an exemption that allows him to compete in this tournament until he turns 60. His five-year exemption for other Majors, including the Masters, PGA Championship, and U.S. Open, expires in 2026. Without another Major win or high finish, his eligibility in these tournaments could be at risk beyond this period.
3) Bryson DeChambeau
After an outstanding win at Pinehurst No. 2 against Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau extended his exemption status at the U.S. Open for another 10 years. For the remaining Majors, DeChambeau’s five-year pass, now reset, exempts him from qualification until 2029.
4) Brooks Koepka
With his 2023 PGA Championship victory, Brooks Koepka earned a five-year exemption across all Major tournaments. He can participate in the Open Championship until 2027, while his Masters exemption is secure through 2028. Additionally, his 2018 U.S. Open win grants him a 10-year exemption, which extends his eligibility for that event until 2028.
5) Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson, a long-standing presence in the golfing world, has lifetime exemptions at the Masters and PGA Championship. However, 2025 will mark the final year of his five-year exemption following his 2021 PGA Championship win. His eligibility for the Open Championship extends until he turns 60, though his participation in the U.S. Open could end after the 2025 season unless he secures another exemption.
This lineup of LIV Golfers represents a unique chapter in professional golf, demonstrating that strong performances in Majors can still offer them a path to the most prestigious tournaments, despite the broader restrictions they face.
