During the NFC Divisional round clash between the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers, Fox sparked controversy by reporting that Packers head coach Matt LaFleur “prays” when his kicker, Anders Carlson, lines up for a kick.
Fox reporter Tom Rinaldi claimed during the broadcast that LaFleur had said, “He basically said when he goes out there, I just pray.” However, LaFleur expressed disappointment after the game, stating that his comments were made “in jest” during a production meeting with the network.
“That was extremely disappointing that that’s how that message got portrayed,” LaFleur said, addressing reporters after the narrow 24-21 loss to the 49ers. “I’ve been a part of production meetings ever since I became a coordinator, and I’ve never had an experience like that. But it is what it is. I talked to Anders about it, and I think anytime something’s out of your control — kind of saying it in jest, having fun with it — but it got portrayed that way and it’s a learning lesson for me.”
Unfortunately for Carlson, whether LaFleur’s comments were in jest or not, they became relevant when Carlson missed a crucial 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter while the Packers were leading 21-17. This miss ultimately played a significant role in the Packers’ 24-21 defeat to the Niners.
Despite the disappointment of the loss, Green Bay and its fans can find solace in the promising future of the franchise. Quarterback Jordan Love showcased himself as a legitimate starter and a potential star during his first season as the team’s starting quarterback, offering optimism for what lies ahead.
