The Green Bay Packers have bolstered their offseason roster with the addition of rookie free agent kicker Jack Podlesny, officially announced by the team on Wednesday.
Following Anders Carlson’s pivotal 41-yard miss in the Packers’ heart-wrenching 24—21 divisional-round playoff defeat against the San Francisco 49ers, Wisconsin is set to welcome a fresh leg to their ranks.
Podlesny, whose last name is pronounced pod-LEZ-knee, enters the scene as a first-year player. Initially, he joined the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie but was released last summer.
A two-time national champion at Georgia, Podlesny is poised to go head-to-head with Carlson, a 2023 sixth-round pick from Auburn, for the coveted starting kicker position in the upcoming 2024 season.
Unlike Carlson, who led the NFL in missed extra-point attempts and struggled in 10 of the Packers’ last 12 games, including the playoffs, Podlesny enters Green Bay with a clean slate.
The former Bulldog showcased his kicking prowess during his tenure at Georgia, converting 82.2% of field goals (60 of 73) and an impressive 98.9% of extra-point attempts (182 of 184) over three seasons. His stellar performance earned him first-team All-SEC honors in his final year.
Addressing the Packers’ kicker situation in an end-of-season press conference, coach Matt LaFleur emphasized the importance of competition, stating, “We want competition at every position, so we’re always going to bring in competition. I’m a firm believer that competition brings out the best in one another.”
