Auston Matthews showcased his goal-scoring prowess, notching his NHL-leading 40th goal and reaching a milestone of 600 career points as the Toronto Maple Leafs secured a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in a home-and-home series on Saturday night.
Ilya Samsonov, guarding the net for Toronto, made 24 crucial saves in the final game before the All-Star break, contributing to the Maple Leafs’ 3rd consecutive win and an improved record of 25-14-8. Ryan Reaves, John Tavares, and Simon Benoit, with an empty-net goal, also found the back of the net, with Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly each tallying two assists.
The Jets, however, managed to score early with defenseman Dylan Samberg registering his first goal of the season at 4:13. Reaves, making his return after a hiatus since December 14, leveled the score by tipping in Noah McGregor’s shot with just 51 seconds remaining in the period.
Entering the third period, the Maple Leafs capitalized on their first power play, as Tavares deftly tipped in Rielly’s shot at 1:54, marking his 13th goal of the season. Matthews sealed the victory with a high-slot goal, extending his impressive points streak to six games, amassing seven goals and three assists during this period.
The win solidified Toronto’s position with a record of 25-14-8, while the Jets faced their third consecutive loss and fourth defeat in six games, bringing their record to 30-12-5.
Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs will host the New York Islanders on Monday, Feb. 5, in their next matchup.
