The much-anticipated clash for the undisputed heavyweight title between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has been rescheduled for May 18th in Saudi Arabia, following Fury’s training injury that led to the initial postponement in February. Despite initial tensions, a high-stakes pullout clause of $10 million for either fighter has been introduced by Turki Alalshikh to ensure commitment to the new date.
In the wake of Fury’s cut preventing the February showdown, Usyk’s team had even sought to have the WBC strip Fury of his title. However, negotiations prevailed, and the bout is now set to proceed, albeit with the added financial consequence for any withdrawal.
Fury’s recent victory over Francis Ngannou in October marked his seventh consecutive win, including notable triumphs over Derek Chisora, Dillian Whyte, and Deontay Wilder. Meanwhile, Usyk secured a ninth-round knockout against Daniel Dubois in August 2023, following back-to-back victories over Anthony Joshua to claim and defend the WBA, WBO, and IBF belts.
The verbal exchanges between Fury and Usyk have intensified with today’s announcement, setting the stage for a highly anticipated and financially significant match in May.
