Carolina Panthers defensive back David Long has had a busy year, transitioning from the Panthers to the Green Bay Packers after being waived over the weekend. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported the news on Twitter, highlighting the Packers’ acquisition of Long off waivers. Long, originally a third-round pick for the Rams in 2019, spent four seasons in Los Angeles before signing a one-year deal with the Raiders. However, he was released by the Raiders in November after eight games. Subsequently, he joined the Panthers for three games before being released again.
Rapoport also noted the free agency status of former Jets safety Adrian Amos, sparking speculation about a potential move to the Packers. The shift in positions between Long (cornerback) and Amos (safety) suggests the Packers are more concerned about the health of their cornerbacks. The injury report reveals challenges, with star corner Jaire Alexander sidelined since November 5 due to a shoulder injury. Eric Stokes, another cornerback, had returned from injury but suffered a hamstring injury in October.
The acquisition of David Long may indicate the Packers’ lack of confidence in Stokes returning this year and concerns about Alexander’s status. With reliance on new starters like rookie Carrington Valentine and Corey Ballentine, the addition of veteran depth in Long addresses the Packers’ cornerback situation.
