Steelers Consider Adding Ryan Tannehill to Quarterback Mix in Offseason

In a bid to revamp their quarterback lineup, the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly eyeing Ryan Tannehill as a potential addition to challenge current starter Kenny Pickett, as per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Tannehill, set to become a free agent after five seasons with the Tennessee Titans, emerges as a prime candidate for the Steelers’ quarterback competition, especially with the recent hiring of Arthur Smith as offensive coordinator. Smith’s prior stint as Tannehill’s offensive coordinator in Tennessee could provide a seamless transition for the veteran quarterback into the Steelers’ system.

With head coach Mike Tomlin emphasizing the need for competition at the quarterback position during his end-of-season press conference, the Steelers are actively seeking options. Pickett, who battled through an ankle injury towards the end of last season, faced uncertainty in the playoffs as backup Mason Rudolph took over.

Rudolph, also hitting free agency, leaves a void in the backup role, prompting Tomlin to seek a reliable option before training camp. Pickett, entering the third year of his rookie contract, has shown potential but has yet to solidify his status as the undisputed starter, leading the Steelers to explore alternatives.

Despite a promising rookie campaign where he started 13 games, Pickett struggled with consistency, reflecting in the team’s offensive rankings—25th in total and passing offense, and 28th in points scored in 2023.

On the other hand, Tannehill brings a proven track record from his tenure with the Titans, boasting 90 touchdowns and 40 interceptions over 63 games, along with a completion rate of 66.6%. However, Tennessee’s drafting of Will Levis last year hinted at a potential shift, leaving Tannehill’s future uncertain.

As the Steelers aim to inject vitality into their offense and address their quarterback situation, the potential addition of Tannehill injects intrigue into their offseason plans. With both Pickett and Tannehill competing for the starting role, the Steelers are poised for an intriguing quarterback battle in the upcoming season.
