FedEx Cup leader Matthieu Pavon has opted out of participating in this week’s highly anticipated Genesis Invitational hosted by golf legend Tiger Woods. Pavon, who has been riding a wave of success in his rookie PGA Tour season, cited the need to take a break and recharge after his recent achievements.
The 31-year-old Frenchman made history by becoming the first French player to win on the PGA Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open held at Torrey Pines just last month. Following this remarkable victory, Pavon continued to impress with a solid third-place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, despite weather-related challenges.
Pavon earned his spot on the PGA Tour this season by securing a card through the DP World Tour in 2023. However, after experiencing the most successful stretch of his professional career, Pavon made the decision to skip both last week’s WM Phoenix Open and this week’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera.
While some may be surprised by Pavon’s choice, especially considering his stellar form and the substantial $20 million prize fund at the Genesis Invitational, Pavon clarified that his decision was not due to injury but rather a desire to prioritize spending time with his family and focusing on improving both his game and fitness.
Speaking to Golf Planete, Pavon explained, “With my team, we redesigned the schedule, so I’m not playing the Phoenix this week… It was difficult to decline because it’s a tournament I’ve really wanted to play since joining the PGA Tour. I had requested invitations… I dreamed of it. But you shouldn’t rush things either.”
Pavon emphasized the importance of balance and planning with his team to ensure he remains competitive in every tournament he enters. He mentioned withdrawing from the Genesis Invitational to have a full week with his family, recharge his batteries, and dedicate time to training both physically and technically.
Despite skipping this week’s event, Pavon remains optimistic about the future, stating, “There are so many great opportunities ahead, there’s no need to chase points… I think I will have plenty of great tournaments to play this year, and even more next year.”
Pavon, who would have qualified for the Genesis Invitational based on his top ranking in The Aon Swing 5 list, made the decision to prioritize his well-being and preparation for future competitions.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on Tiger Woods as he makes his official PGA Tour comeback at the Genesis Invitational after being sidelined since April 2023. The 15-time major champion is not only returning to competitive golf but also showcasing his new Sun Day Red apparel and footwear as the tournament host.
