Patrick Cantlay seized the spotlight at The Genesis Invitational, demonstrating his prowess on the green with a stunning 7-under 64 to claim the lead. The Southern California native set the tone early with three birdies in four holes, showcasing his intent to dominate at The Riviera Country Club.
While thousands of fans eagerly anticipated Tiger Woods’ return to the greens in 2024, Cantlay’s stellar performance stole the show. Despite encountering a setback with a shot obstructed by a sycamore tree, Cantlay maintained his momentum to secure a one-shot lead.
Joining Cantlay at the top of the leaderboard were Jason Day, Luke List, and Cam Davis, all posting bogey-free rounds of 65. Jordan Spieth also made a strong start with a 66, matching Cantlay’s early brilliance.
The day’s action was not without its share of drama and surprises. Woods, in his season debut, struggled to find his rhythm, evident in a shank from the middle of the 18th fairway. Despite moments of brilliance, including a remarkable recovery shot through a narrow gap in the eucalyptus trees, Woods finished 1-over with a score of 72.
Justin Thomas encountered a unique challenge, having to play a shot off the concrete boundary wall of the driving range. Sam Burns provided a highlight of his own with an improbable par save from a bunker behind the 10th green.
Rory McIlroy experienced a rollercoaster back nine, succumbing to a double bogey-triple bogey stretch that dashed his hopes of contending for the lead.
For Cantlay, the day’s success was underscored by his exceptional putting and ability to navigate challenging situations. Despite a wayward tee shot on the par-3 16th, Cantlay remained composed, ultimately carding eight birdies and just one bogey.
Reflecting on his performance, Cantlay expressed satisfaction with his strong start, highlighting the positive momentum shared with playing partner Spieth.
As the tournament unfolds, Cantlay aims to follow in the footsteps of past champions hailing from Southern California, including Max Homa and John Merrick.
While Woods grappled with competitive rust and a nagging back issue, Cantlay’s stellar play signaled his intent to contend for victory at The Genesis Invitational.
