Tiger Woods’ sudden departure from the Genesis Invitational due to illness has stunned the PGA Tour. His exit, prompted by flu-like symptoms, highlights his ongoing health struggles.
Woods, visibly frustrated, stopped playing after teeing off on the seventh hole at Riviera Country Club, requiring assistance from tournament officials to leave the course in a golf cart. Rob McNamara, an executive at TGR Ventures and Woods’ close associate, disclosed that Woods had been battling flu symptoms since Thursday night, worsening by Friday morning. Despite medical efforts, including intravenous fluids, Woods couldn’t continue due to dizziness and dehydration.
McNamara reassured fans that Woods’ back issues, stemming from multiple surgeries, weren’t the cause of his withdrawal. However, concerns lingered, especially after Woods experienced back spasms during Thursday’s round.
The Genesis Invitational was significant for Woods, both as a player and tournament host supporting his foundation. His early exit disappointed fans and marked the end of his campaign, leading to many leaving the venue.
This setback adds to Woods’ challenges since his return from a serious car accident in 2021. Withdrawals and missed cuts have become common, raising doubts about his ability to sustain competitive play. Despite his determination to continue, his body’s toll remains a significant hurdle.
As Woods faces another setback, the golfing world wonders if he can overcome these obstacles and reclaim his place at the sport’s pinnacle.
