Tiger Woods, the iconic golfer, faced disappointment at the Genesis Invitational as he was forced to withdraw during Friday’s second round. This marked his return to the PGA Tour after his last appearance at the Masters in the previous year. However, Woods’ comeback was short-lived as he managed only six holes before halting his play. While concerns over his injury resurfaced, his business partner Rob McNamara clarified that Woods was suffering from flu-like symptoms.
The 48-year-old, battling “flu-like symptoms,” expressed his determination to compete in upcoming majors despite his setback at the Genesis Invitational. Despite McNamara’s reassurance regarding Woods’ condition, the golfer appeared visibly upset as he was escorted back to the clubhouse at the California golf course.
Woods showed promise at the beginning of his second round with an opening birdie. However, consecutive bogeys followed before he made the decision to end his participation. McNamara elaborated on Woods’ condition, stating, “He started feeling some flu-like symptoms last night. Woke up this morning, they were worse than the night previous. He had a little bit of a fever and that, and was better during the warm-up, but then when he got out there and was walking and playing, he started feeling dizzy.”
McNamara confirmed that Woods’ withdrawal was solely due to medical reasons, emphasizing that there were no physical injuries. He clarified, “Correct, correct. Not physical at all, his back’s fine. It was all medical illness, dehydration, which is now the symptoms are reversing themselves now that he’s had an IV.”
Since securing his 14th major title at the US Open in 2008, Woods has grappled with various injuries. His remarkable comeback culminated in a victory at the Masters in 2019, yet he hasn’t clinched a PGA Tour victory since the Zoro Championship in the same year.
Reflecting on his career trajectory, Woods acknowledged the likelihood of transitioning away from full-time golfing following a car accident three years ago. In an interview with Golf Digest in 2021, he admitted, “I think something that is realistic is playing the tour one day – never full time, ever again – but pick and choose.”
Despite setbacks, Woods remains a resilient figure in the world of golf, continually captivating audiences with his enduring spirit and determination.
