In a recent revelation, Jon Rahm shared his experience of reaching out to Tiger Woods after deciding to join LIV Golf last December. However, Rahm received no response from the PGA Tour legend, raising questions about Woods’ stance on the matter.
Rahm’s move to LIV Golf, with a reported £450 million deal, marked a significant shift in the golfing landscape. Despite the silence from Woods, his Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy publicly supported Rahm’s decision, a surprising turn given McIlroy’s previous criticism of LIV Golf.
Reflecting on his outreach efforts, Rahm explained, “Rory has been supportive publicly of my decision and he was privately as well. Tiger? No, not really [had a response]. I texted him and the people that tried to reach out throughout the process when I signed and I just let him know, ‘Hey, this is a personal decision, I have nothing against anybody’.”
Given Woods’ influence in the golfing world, Rahm’s lack of response may have been concerning. However, behind the scenes, discussions between PGA Tour leadership and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) are underway to pave a way for LIV Golf stars to potentially return to their former tour.
Woods addressed the ongoing discussions, stating, “We’re looking into all the different models for pathways back. What that looks like, what the impact is for the players who have stayed and who have not left and how we make our product better going forward, there is no answer to that right now.”
Despite uncertainties, there is a concerted effort to explore various options for the future of the PGA Tour amidst the emergence of LIV Golf. Rahm, a Masters champion, expressed his desire to maintain his PGA Tour and DP World Tour status, emphasizing his intention to compete across multiple tours.
As Rahm navigates the evolving golfing landscape, he remains hopeful that with the freedom afforded by LIV Golf, he can continue to participate in PGA Tour events while balancing his commitments across different tours. The outcome of ongoing discussions will undoubtedly shape the future dynamics of professional golf.
