Rory McIlroy, the seasoned golfer, is eyeing a different strategy this season, particularly in the lead-up to the Masters. Known for skipping events like the Cognizant Classic at the Palm Beaches, formerly the Honda Classic, McIlroy’s participation signals a shift in focus as he aims to complete the elusive grand slam at Augusta National in April.
Despite his usual absence from this tournament, McIlroy made a notable entrance, opening with a commendable 4-under 67. While a solitary bogey on No. 8 at PGA National marred his round, McIlroy expressed satisfaction, telling reporters, “Probably could have been a couple of shots better, but overall a decent start.”
Adding circles to his scorecard with birdies at strategic holes, McIlroy showcased his prowess. Paired with rising talent Jake Knapp and defending champion Chris Kirk, McIlroy observed Knapp’s performance closely, acknowledging the potential for stardom. Knapp, fresh from his maiden victory at the Mexico Open, displayed promise with a solid 3-under 68.
McIlroy’s praise for Knapp’s abilities was effusive, noting his speed, control, and impressive short game. “He could definitely be a star,” McIlroy commented. “He’s the full package. He could be a superstar out here for sure.”
In response, Knapp downplayed any nerves playing alongside McIlroy, emphasizing the camaraderie among players. “I met him this morning and had some casual conversation,” Knapp shared. “He’s a super, super nice guy. So is Chris. It was just a good easy morning.”
While Chad Ramey seized the lead after 18 holes at an impressive 7-under, contenders like Billy Horschel, Cameron Young, and Shane Lowry, who matched McIlroy’s score in round one, remain in contention, setting the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.
