FANS BLAST PGA TOUR ‘CLOWN SHOW’ AS COGNIZANT CLASSIC FORCED INTO MONDAY FINISH

Posted on March 4, 2024

The PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic at PGA National in The Palm Beaches encountered turbulent weather, necessitating a Monday finish and drawing ire from golf fans who labeled it a ‘clown show.’ South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen held a one-stroke lead after an impressive start, while overnight leaders Shane Lowry, David Skinns, and Austin Eckroat hadn’t teed off yet when play was halted on Sunday at 12:50pm ET.

Fans questioned the decision not to initiate an earlier start with groups of three and a two-tee setup, especially given the forecast. This prompted frustration online, with one user labeling it a “clown show” and others criticizing the lack of foresight. This isn’t the first time this season the PGA Tour has faced weather-related challenges; the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was reduced to 54 holes due to adverse conditions, resulting in Wyndham Clark being declared the winner.

This has raised eyebrows, particularly in comparison to LIV Golf’s approach of playing 54-hole events and awarding full world ranking points. These incidents highlight potential areas for improvement in PGA Tour event management.
