Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury in their rematch, successfully defending his title as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Shortly after the fight, the World Boxing Council (WBC) announced the suspension of both fighters. The reason? Potential health concerns stemming from a premature return to the ring. Here’s how long the suspension will last.
On Saturday night, Usyk and Fury faced off in a highly anticipated bout. Earlier this year, the Ukrainian emerged victorious, and he repeated the feat in their rematch. Judges awarded Usyk the win in 8 out of 12 rounds, allowing him to retain his title as the undisputed heavyweight champion.
Surprising Suspension for Both Fighters
After the fight, unexpected news emerged. The WBC, one of the most prestigious boxing organizations in the world, decided to suspend both Usyk and Fury. The decision was made out of concern for the fighters’ health if they were to return to the ring too soon.
“Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk and British fighter Tyson Fury have been suspended for health reasons following their rematch for the title. […] The WBC has prohibited both from entering the ring for the next 36 days to prevent potential health issues,” reported sport24.ru.
Reaction from Ukraine’s President
The outcome of the fight even drew a response from Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. “Victory! So important and so needed by all of us right now. By defending his championship belt, Oleksandr Usyk proves: we are Ukrainians, and we will not give up what is ours! No matter how hard it gets – we will overcome everything. Whether in the ring, on the battlefield, or in the diplomatic arena – we will fight and protect what is ours! Congratulations on the victory, Kozak! Congratulations to Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!” he wrote.
