Tiger Woods, a two-time Players Champion and 82-time PGA Tour winner, will be notably absent from the upcoming Players Championship at the Stadium Course, TPC Sawgrass. Despite Woods’ absence, golf enthusiasts can still expect a thrilling tournament with a lineup boasting some of the game’s biggest stars.
Leading the pack is world No. 1-ranked Scottie Scheffler, who is also the defending champion. Joining him are top-ranked players such as Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, and Max Homa, among others. The final commitment list, released by the PGA Tour, confirms the presence of nine of the top-10 players in the world.
Woods, who has been recovering from ankle fusion surgery, hasn’t played since the Genesis Invitational. Despite his absence, the Players Championship promises to deliver excitement with 18 of the top 20 players in the world, 46 of the top 50, and 85 of the top 100 set to compete.
However, some notable names will be missing from the field due to their involvement with the LIV Golf League, including Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, and Cameron Smith, the 2022 Players champion.
As for Woods’ future participation in The Players, his eligibility is uncertain beyond his current exemption. Unless a new category is established, Woods would need to secure a PGA Tour victory within the next year or finish within the top 125 on the FedEx Cup points list by the end of the 2024 season.
Despite Woods’ absence, the Players Championship remains a highly anticipated event, showcasing the immense talent and competitiveness of the golfing world. With a star-studded field set to grace the Stadium Course, fans can expect nothing short of spectacular golfing action.
