Joel Edmundson’s impact on the Maple Leafs transcends his recent arrival as a teammate. Harkening back to the 2021 Stanley Cup playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens, where Edmundson’s intimidating presence on the blue line left a lasting impression, both on opponents and admirers like Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe.
Reflecting on Edmundson’s performance, Keefe recalled how the defenseman made it a daunting task for opposing players to approach the net. “You just remember that he made it miserable to get to the net,” Keefe remarked. “Can’t remember how many times you’re watching the video and you think there could be five or six minor penalties called on a shift, but that’s playoff hockey and the way it goes. He’s ultra-competitive around the most dangerous area in protecting the net.”
Auston Matthews echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Edmundson’s physicality and tenacity in front of the net. “Heavy stick, heavy lumber in front of the net and that makes it hard on you. If you’re going to go there, you have to pay the price. He’s going to bring it every night.”
As the Leafs look to the future under the guidance of general manager Brad Treliving, Edmundson’s presence promises to infuse the team with a rugged, playoff-style edge, reminiscent of his previous clashes with the Leafs during the 2021 playoff series.
One notable confrontation occurred between Edmundson and former Leafs forward Wayne Simmonds, who has since retired from the NHL and transitioned into a role as an analyst with TSN. Recalling the intense playoff battle, Edmundson remarked, “It was a hell of a series, could have gone either way.”
Now, with his focus shifted to his new team, Edmundson aims to acclimate quickly to the Leafs’ system following his trade from the Washington Capitals. In his debut game alongside Timothy Liljegren, the pair showcased their chemistry in Toronto’s victory over Montreal, with Edmundson emphasizing his eagerness to contribute to the team’s success.
Notably, Edmundson’s aggressive style of play, characterized by net-front cross-checks, thrives in the intensity of playoff hockey. “The refs let more slide (in the post-season),” he acknowledged. “I think that helps my game a lot. I’ve been playing my best hockey in the playoffs, and unfortunately haven’t been in the playoffs for a couple years now, so I’m excited to get back there.”
As the Leafs gear up for their playoff push, Joel Edmundson stands poised to be a pivotal figure in their quest for postseason glory, bringing a potent blend of skill, physicality, and postseason experience to the Toronto roster.
