Renowned golf writer Bob Harig delved deep into Tiger Woods’ storied career for his latest book, “Drive: The Lasting Legacy of Tiger Woods,” set to hit shelves on March 26. Despite Woods’ well-documented journey, Harig unearthed intriguing insights, particularly surrounding Woods’ pivotal spinal fusion surgery in April 2017, which played a pivotal role in his remarkable comeback to win the 2019 Masters.
In a recent interview on The Loop podcast, Harig teased one chapter titled “The Doctor,” shedding light on Woods’ surgery performed by Dr. Richard Guyer. While Dr. Guyer couldn’t divulge personal details due to privacy constraints, Harig gleaned insights from him and Woods’ practice partner, revealing the remarkable nature of Woods’ resurgence from the surgery.
Harig recounted the 2017 Masters Champions Dinner, where Woods, grappling with excruciating pain, confided to a fellow champion, “I’m done,” as recalled by three-time Masters winner Nick Faldo. Despite persistent attempts at a comeback, including at Torrey Pines and Dubai, Woods’ condition deteriorated, culminating in a harrowing experience at the Champions Dinner.
Woods’ distress was palpable, necessitating nerve-numbing drugs to endure the evening. Harig detailed Woods’ subsequent trip to London for consultations and specialized testing, culminating in the decision to undergo spinal fusion surgery the following day.
Even amidst uncertainty about his playing future, Woods remained characteristically elusive, leaving fans and pundits guessing. Yet, the very next day after a promotional event for his new course design in Branson, Missouri, Woods underwent the transformative surgery that paved the way for his awe-inspiring resurgence.
Through meticulous research and compelling narratives, Harig’s book promises to offer fresh perspectives on Tiger Woods’ enduring legacy, encapsulating the triumphs and tribulations of one of golf’s most iconic figures.
