MayTyson Fury recently reminded Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, about the contractual obligations that could delay a potential fight between the two British boxers until Fury faces Oleksandr Usyk twice. Hearn has acknowledged Fury’s remarks and stated that no decision will be made regarding Joshua’s next fight until after Fury and Usyk’s bout on May 18. However, he seems to agree with Fury’s alternative plan if the initial plan falls through.
The callout occurred in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, right after Joshua’s impressive knockout victory over Francis Ngannou. Fury, who was ringside watching his brother Roman’s fight, was quickly approached for his thoughts on the main event.
Negotiations between Fury and Joshua for a fight have been ongoing for years, and Hearn used the opportunity after Joshua’s victory to reopen discussions. Hearn mentioned speaking to His Excellency Turki Alalshikh about hosting the potential fight against Fury in the future.
While fighting Fury remains the priority, Hearn has acknowledged the possibility of Joshua facing Hrgovic, as suggested by Fury himself. Hrgovic, the mandatory challenger for the belt, would have fought the winner of Fury vs. Usyk under different circumstances.
If Fury loses for the first time in his career, it could potentially hinder the prospects of an all-British fight with Joshua, impacting his legacy. However, an even series between Fury and Usyk could set up a decisive third fight, akin to the trilogy Fury had with Deontay Wilder.
Should Fury emerge victorious against Usyk, the path would be clear for a showdown with Joshua, potentially in 2025, considering their rematch is already scheduled for October. Hearn believes this could be the biggest fight in boxing history.
“There’s a fighter here called Tyson Fury. Please, please beat Oleksandr Usyk on May 18, because I promise you, you will get the biggest fight in the history of the sport when Anthony Joshua takes the undisputed world championship,” said Hearn.
“Joshua has always stayed in the gym, always worked, never taken a shortcut in his life. As a fighter, he is an inspiration to young people, and I promise you he isn’t getting beat… this man is a savage, a beast, the best in the world, and I cannot wait for him to beat Tyson Fury,” he added.
