LAs the April 11 start of the Masters at Augusta National approaches, 29-year-old Spanish golfer Jon Rahm reflects on the repercussions of his decision last December to depart from the PGA Tour. While he eagerly anticipates the prestigious tournament, Rahm acknowledges the challenges of watching from afar as other players claim titles he secured in 2023.
“For those who thought it would be smooth sailing, there have certainly been hurdles, especially not being able to defend titles that hold significant meaning to me,” Rahm expressed.
In 2023, Rahm clinched victories at the PGA Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, the American Express at Palm Springs, and the Genesis Invitational at Riviera before claiming the coveted green jacket at Augusta National. However, due to his association with LIV, he is prohibited from participating in PGA Tour events, despite ranking second on the season points list.
Expressing his fondness for Palm Springs and Riviera, where he secured wins, Rahm lamented his absence from these renowned courses. “Not being there was challenging,” he admitted. Despite his exclusion, Rahm remains an avid spectator of the sport, albeit with a tinge of longing. He confessed, “It was difficult not to be at the Phoenix Open or Hawaii.”
Looking ahead to his return to Augusta National, Rahm eagerly anticipates competing against the world’s top golfers from both rival tours. “Thus far, it has been a positive journey, playing good golf,” Rahm remarked. “But I’m truly looking forward to reuniting with the best and teeing it up at the Masters.”
Reflecting on the opportunity to defend his title, Rahm remarked, “This could mark my second-ever title defense. That would be truly remarkable.” Despite the disappointment of missing earlier opportunities, Rahm expressed his determination to focus on the present. “I don’t dwell on tournaments I haven’t defended. It’s a decision I made and am at peace with,” he stated.
Joining a select group including Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Nick Faldo, who have secured back-to-back Masters titles, remains a lofty goal for Rahm. However, he remains optimistic about the future of golf amidst ongoing merger discussions between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, LIV’s backers.
“I envision a future where the best compete against the best, irrespective of affiliations,” Rahm asserted. While acknowledging potential tensions between PGA and LIV players, Rahm remains committed to maintaining respect for all individuals involved.
As he prepares to visit Augusta National for practice rounds, Rahm believes in the potential of LIV’s team concept to enhance the sport’s future. “There’s room for both team and individual golf,” Rahm opined. “If we can achieve harmony, it could propel the game to new heights.”
