Charlie Woods, the son of golf legend Tiger Woods, faced a tough initiation into the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) circuit at the Will Lowery Junior Championship. The 15-year-old finished his debut event 21-over par after three rounds at the Carolina Trace Country Club.
Throughout the tournament, Charlie struggled to find his rhythm, posting rounds of 78, 81, and 78. Despite his efforts, he ended up tied for 34th out of 51 competitors in the field.
One of the standout performers of the tournament was Patmom Malcolm, who surged ahead with an impressive 6-under par as he headed into the back nine.
Charlie, who celebrated his 15th birthday in February, earned a sponsor’s invite to the event. His father, Tiger Woods, a 15-time major champion, was seen supporting him during his maiden appearance on the AJGA circuit.
Tiger, who had to make a quick return from the Bahamas to attend the tournament, had reportedly been in discussions with LIV Golf chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan earlier in the week.
Reflecting on his performance, Charlie’s debut was marked by ups and downs. In the first round, he managed to card birdies on the 6th, 7th, and 14th holes but struggled with five bogeys and consecutive double bogeys on the 2nd and 3rd, finishing with a 6-over 78.
The challenges continued into the second round, with Charlie recording eight bogeys and a double bogey, offset by a lone birdie on the 4th hole. He entered the final round at 15-over par, tied for 40th place.
Despite a rocky start in the final round, Charlie showed resilience by bouncing back with a birdie on the 17th and consecutive birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes. However, a few setbacks, including a bogey on the 1st and a double bogey on the 5th, prevented him from climbing higher on the leaderboard.
Nevertheless, Charlie finished on a positive note with a birdie on the 9th hole, wrapping up the tournament with a 6-over 78 in the final round.
While it was a challenging three days for Charlie, his AJGA debut serves as a valuable learning experience for the young golfer. Despite not achieving the desired results, he showcased determination and potential, leaving room for growth and improvement in future tournaments.
