In the absence of Joseph Woll, nursing a high ankle sprain, Ilya Samsonov led the Toronto Maple Leafs to their first shutout of the season with a 4-0 victory against the Nashville Predators at Scotiabank Arena. Samsonov’s stellar performance included making just 18 saves on Saturday night.
This marked the Leafs’ first shutout since April 1, with Samsonov’s previous blanking of the Ottawa Senators on the road. Defensively, the team showcased a commendable performance, securing their second win in regulation and seventh regulation victory of the season. Despite Nashville’s recent success, the Leafs limited high-danger scoring chances.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe praised the team’s effort, stating, “It was as tidy a game as we’ve played. A team game like that takes care of everybody.” The Leafs’ defense demonstrated solid performance, with effective gap control and quick plays in the defensive zone.
The victory contributed to the Leafs’ impressive 8-1-2 record in their past 11 games. Auston Matthews continued his stellar season, scoring two goals, bringing his total to 18. Additionally, John Tavares notched his 998th career NHL point, with an opportunity to reach the milestone 1,000 points on Monday night against his former team, the New York Islanders.
Keefe further commended the team, stating, “That’s as good a team win as we’ve had.” With momentum on their side, the Maple Leafs look to build on this complete performance as they face upcoming challenges in the season.
