With a decisive goal in the closing minutes of the third period against the Buffalo Sabres, Matthews notched his 60th goal of the season, marking the second time in his career he has reached this milestone.
In doing so, Matthews joins an exclusive group of players, standing as the sole active player with two 60-goal seasons. He shares this distinction with hockey luminaries such as Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin, Boston Bruins’ David Pastrnak, and Tampa Bay Lightning’s Steven Stamkos.
Matthews’ achievement further cements his legacy, as he becomes only the ninth player in NHL history to achieve multiple 60-goal seasons. This illustrious list includes legends like Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Phil Esposito, Brett Hull, Pavel Bure, Steve Yzerman, and Jari Kurri.
Notably, Matthews previously reached the 60-goal mark during the 2021-22 season, showcasing his consistency and dominance on the ice.
The question now arises: can Matthews surpass the 70-goal milestone, a feat not accomplished in over three decades? Historically, the NHL witnessed a surge in 60-goal seasons during the 1980s and early 1990s, characterized by prolific goal-scoring. However, in subsequent decades, goal-scoring declined, with few players even reaching the 40- or 50-goal mark.
In recent years, however, the league has witnessed a resurgence in offensive prowess, with Matthews emerging as a prominent figure in this revitalized era. As the league shifts towards a more skillful and offensive style of play, Matthews stands at the forefront, leading the charge with his unmatched scoring ability.
Indeed, in the current landscape of the NHL, no player rivals Matthews in terms of goal-scoring prowess, setting the stage for a potential historic season as he continues to light the lamp with remarkable consistency and skill.
