Reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm, who recently inked a monumental deal to join LIV Golf for the upcoming 2024 season, has proposed a solution to the series’ struggle for recognition by the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Rahm’s move to LIV Golf, especially after leading his Legion XIII to victory at LIV Golf Miami, solidifies him as one of the most prominent signings for the Saudi-backed circuit since its inception in 2021. With a staggering £450 million agreement spanning over four-and-a-half years, Rahm’s presence adds considerable weight to the burgeoning league.
Following his team’s success at LIV Golf Miami, Rahm offered insights during an interview with the BBC, suggesting a shift to a more traditional 72-hole format could be the key to gaining recognition from the OWGR. He emphasized the importance of aligning LIV Golf’s structure with established standards in the golfing world, particularly those upheld by the PGA Tour.
The OWGR’s decision to withhold World Ranking points from LIV Golf events in 2023 stemmed from the series’ 54-hole format, which diverged from the conventional 72-hole format with a 36-hole cut. Peter Dawson, chairman of the OWGR board, highlighted the need for equitable playing conditions across all professional tours.
Rahm, cognizant of his influential position within LIV Golf, expressed optimism that his advocacy for change could spark a shift towards a more universally accepted format. He acknowledged the weight of his decision to join LIV Golf and its potential impact on the sport, emphasizing his commitment to fostering positive change.
Additionally, Rahm expressed frustration at the lack of progress in negotiations between LIV Golf, the PGA Tour, and the DP World Tour. While initial talks surrounding a potential agreement garnered attention, concrete developments have been slow to materialize.
In reflecting on his decision to join LIV Golf, Rahm recognized the potential for disruption in the golfing landscape but remained confident in his ability to navigate the evolving dynamics of the sport. He viewed his move as a catalyst for broader discussions and collaboration within the golfing community, paving the way for future developments in the sport’s global landscape.
