Scottie Scheffler, the reigning No. 1-ranked golf player for over two years, asserts that his identity extends far beyond his athletic prowess. In a recent press conference preceding the Masters Tournament, the 27-year-old emphasized that his faith in Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of his character, surpassing any golfing achievements.
Reflecting on his journey, Scheffler humbly attributed his success to a higher power, stating, “I’m a faithful guy. I believe in a Creator. I believe in Jesus. Ultimately, I think that’s what defines me the most.” Despite his remarkable talent on the golf course, Scheffler maintains that his purpose transcends mere athletic pursuits.
Recalling his emotions prior to significant events, such as the 2022 Masters Tournament, Scheffler admitted to feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Yet, amidst the pressures of competition, his unwavering faith remains his guiding light. “I think that’s what defines me the most is my faith,” Scheffler reiterated. “I believe in one Creator, that I’ve been called to come out here, do my best, compete, and glorify God, and that’s pretty much it.”
Expressing a desire for golf not to overshadow his identity, Scheffler candidly acknowledged the self-centered nature of the sport. “I’m hoping it doesn’t define me too much because — I feel like I say it a bunch — golf’s something that I do,” he remarked. “It’s a tremendously huge part of my life. But it doesn’t define me as a person. It’s just something that I do.”
Scheffler’s unwavering faith intertwines with his golfing career, evident in his post-victory reflections. Following his triumph at the Masters two years ago, he emphasized his intent to glorify God through his athletic endeavors, rather than seeking personal accolades. “The reason why I play golf is I’m trying to glorify God and all that he’s done in my life,” Scheffler emphasized.
Notably, Scheffler’s commitment to his Christian beliefs extends beyond the fairways. He shares a unique bond with his caddie, Ted Scott, whom he specifically sought out for their shared faith. Scott revealed, “He called me up and said, ‘I really want to work with a Christian.’ That’s how I try to live my life.”
As the Masters Tournament unfolds, Scheffler remains focused on his faith-driven approach to the game, currently tied for second place, trailing behind leader Bryson DeChambeau by a single stroke.
