Neal Shipley, the 22-year-old amateur golfer, recently shared his exhilarating experience of playing alongside his childhood hero, Tiger Woods, at the 2024 Masters Tournament. Shipley, the lone amateur to make the cut at Augusta National this year, described the opportunity as “the frickin’ coolest day of my life.”

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN, Shipley reflected on his unforgettable round with Woods, a 15-time major champion. Dismissing rumors of Woods passing him a note on the green, Shipley emphasized the profound impact of sharing the course with the golf legend. “I mean, Tiger is so cool, and that’s probably once in a lifetime for me,” Shipley remarked, highlighting the rarity of the experience given Woods’ reduced playing schedule.

Recalling the atmosphere on the course, Shipley expressed awe at witnessing Woods receive a standing ovation on the 12th tee and as he approached the 18th green. “It was so cool,” Shipley exclaimed, describing the electric energy surrounding Woods’ presence.

Despite the pressure of playing in front of Woods and the gallery at Augusta National, Shipley remained focused on his game, receiving a notable compliment from Woods himself. “At the end of the day, it’s just golf,” Shipley remarked, illustrating his calm demeanor amidst the excitement.

Shipley reminisced about the moment he learned he would be paired with Woods, a revelation that lifted his spirits after a disappointing third-round performance. Excitedly informed by his caddie and friend, Carter Pitcairn, Shipley’s emotions quickly turned around as he anticipated the opportunity to play alongside his idol.

In his final round with Woods, Shipley delivered a commendable performance, carding a 1-over 73 and securing the Silver Cup. Reflecting on his achievement, Shipley described the week as a “dream,” acknowledging the significance of the experience.

Looking ahead, Shipley expressed his desire to continue pursuing his golfing dreams, aiming to eventually compete for the coveted green jacket. “I think I have to win one of these things to kind of top this week,” Shipley remarked, underscoring his ambition and determination in the sport.
