Pete Dougherty of The Green Bay Press-Gazette raises concerns about Aaron Jones’ future with the Packers, hinting at a potential departure after the 2023 NFL season. Citing worries about Jones’ declining health, Dougherty points out that the team could save $5.4 million by releasing him in the upcoming offseason. While General Manager Brian Gutekunst may consider proposing a pay cut, uncertainties surrounding Jones’ situation might hinder negotiations, paving the way for an unexpected reality of him not being on the field for the Packers.
In the current season, Jones has encountered setbacks, participating in only seven games due to hamstring and knee injuries. Amidst these challenges, he has managed 245 rushing yards and a couple of touchdowns, marking his least productive season in the NFL. Additionally, he has recorded 19 receptions for 169 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Drafted by the Packers in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Jones had a steady start to his NFL career before breaking out in his third season. During that standout year, he amassed 1,084 rushing yards, a league-leading 16 touchdowns, and showcased dual-threat ability with 49 receptions for 474 yards and three scores.
Continuing his impressive performance, Jones earned his first Pro Bowl nod in 2020, boasting 1,104 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, along with 47 catches for 355 yards and two touchdowns. In 2022, he set a career-high with 1,121 rushing yards and concluded the season with 59 receptions for 395 yards and five touchdowns.
As the Green Bay Packers face a challenging 6-7 season entering Week 15, recently having their winning streak snapped by the New York Giants, Jones and the team must confront a crucial matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The outcome of this game holds significant importance for Green Bay’s playoff aspirations.
In light of Jones’ health struggles, there is hope that he can regain full health and return to the field. However, if not, his potential last season with the Packers may conclude in stark contrast to the majority of his tenure with the team.
