Phil Mickelson, despite hinting at retirement, displayed his enduring prowess on day one of LIV Golf Singapore, reminding fans why he earned the moniker ‘the Thrill’.
Addressing reporters before teeing off at Sentosa Golf Club, Mickelson suggested his career might be winding down. However, his performance on the course indicates otherwise, with his exceptional shot-making capabilities still very much intact.

One particular highlight occurred at Sentosa’s par-5 18th hole. Following a solid drive landing in the fairway, Mickelson chose the aggressive route for his second shot. Using his trusty driver once more, he unleashed a remarkable shot from 300 yards out, sending the ball soaring through the air to land on the green, settling near the first cut of rough.
Commentator David Feherty couldn’t contain his amazement, exclaiming, “Oh my word,” as Mickelson’s shot unfolded.
Despite his impressive play, Mickelson finished the day with a one-over 72, placing him in a tie for 41st in the 54-man field. Meanwhile, Sebastion Munoz seized the lead by one shot over Thomas Pieters and Brooks Koepka.
Since joining the breakaway league in 2022, Mickelson has yet to secure a victory. This season, his performance has been modest, with only one top-10 finish in Jeddah.
Reflecting on his career, Mickelson acknowledged its twilight phase, stating, “If I’m being truthful, it’s towards its end.” However, he expressed a desire to share the joy and fulfillment he’s found in golf with others.
Whether on the course alone, enjoying solitude, or competing alongside family and friends, Mickelson emphasized the myriad joys the game offers. He aspires to guide and inspire others to experience the same sense of fulfillment and camaraderie that golf has provided him throughout his illustrious career.
