The PGA Championship roster has been finalized with the inclusion of Tiger Woods in the field, marking a significant moment in golf. The released field for the event at Valhalla next week comprises 99 of the top 100 players in the world ranking, underlining the PGA of America’s commitment to assembling the strongest field among the four majors.
While the PGA aims to attract the top 100 players, this isn’t a strict criterion. However, hopes to achieve this milestone were dashed when Rikuya Hoshino withdrew late Tuesday, leaving the field at 99.
To bolster the lineup, the PGA employs “special invitations,” and this year, seven players from the Saudi-funded LIV Golf have received such invites. Notable among them is Patrick Reed, whose recent performance at the Masters propelled him to No. 92 in the world rankings, ensuring his streak of playing in every major since the 2014 Masters remains intact.
The PGA Championship returns to Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, where Rory McIlroy emerged victorious in 2014. Valhalla is renowned for Tiger Woods’ memorable playoff victory over Bob May in 2000, securing his third consecutive major title.
Among the invitees from LIV Golf is Joaquin Niemann, who boasts multiple victories, including the Australian Open and two wins on the LIV circuit this year. Additionally, surprise inclusion Talor Gooch, who primarily competes in the Saudi league, earned his invitation based on impressive performances, winning three times on the LIV tour in 2023 and topping the season points list.
Other recipients of special invitations include Dean Burmester, Lucas Herbert, Adrian Meronk, and David Puig. Puig’s rise in the Asian Tour, with six top-10 finishes in his last seven events, including two wins, earned him a spot despite being ranked No. 106.
The LIV contingent comprises 16 players, a slight decrease from the previous year. Notably absent is British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, who declined his invitation due to personal commitments.
Defending champion Brooks Koepka headlines the LIV group, aiming for a historic fourth PGA Championship title. The championship director, Kerry Haigh, has emphasized considering deserving players from various tours worldwide, evident in invitations extended to players like Tim Widing and Kazuma Kobori.
Furthermore, the field includes 21 club professionals, with Michael Block qualifying through his performance last year. The PGA has reserved two spots in case the winners of the Wells Fargo Championship and the Myrtle Beach Classic are not already eligible, ensuring the possibility for additional talent to join the prestigious event.
