Earlier on Friday morning, an accident near the golf course resulted in a pedestrian being struck and killed, leading to heavy traffic around the area. In his attempt to navigate the congestion and get to the course, Scheffler tried to bypass the police, which led to his confrontation with law enforcement.
The chaotic scene unfolded when Scheffler was stopped by the police. ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington captured the incident on his phone. When Darlington approached the officers to inquire about the situation, one officer instructed him to back away, stating, “He’s going to jail and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
Scheffler was arrested and detained by the Louisville Police Department but was later released. The accident and adverse weather conditions have caused delays in the start of Friday’s play. Scheffler, currently five shots behind the lead after shooting a 67 on Thursday, now faces an uncertain situation regarding his participation in the tournament.
There has been no official statement from the PGA regarding any potential disciplinary action against Scheffler. As the world’s No. 1 player, his status in the competition remains in question amidst these unfolding events.
