When Scottie Scheffler was arrested before his second round at the PGA Championship this past Friday, initial police reports and eyewitness accounts described the dramatic scene. Now, a few days later, another eyewitness has provided additional details that shed new light on the incident.
According to ESPN reporter Bob Wischusen, who witnessed the arrest, the police officer pursuing Scheffler tripped and fell while running alongside the golfer’s vehicle. Initial police reports had claimed that Scheffler’s vehicle “dragged” the officer to the ground.
Wischusen explained that as Scheffler drove past the officer, the situation quickly escalated. “The cop got very angry pursuing the car. My impression was he was kind of running alongside chasing the car and maybe he tripped and fell. There was an outcropping or median by the front gate, and keep in mind, it was raining, it was 6 o’clock in the morning, and it was dark. I could see him stumble, but I did not have a very clear view of exactly how his contact with the car happened,” Wischusen told Golf.com.
Wischusen added that Scheffler was driving at a reasonable speed as he approached the front gate of Valhalla Golf Club. The officer, identified as Bryan Gillis, angrily ordered Scheffler out of the car. “He runs up to the driver’s side, and with the butt end of his flashlight starts screaming, ‘Get out of the car, get out of the car’ — banging on the window — ‘shut the engine off, get out of the car. I’m a police officer.’ He put him up against the car and put him in handcuffs. That was when we realized — all the way up until then we’re like, oh my God, whoever is in this car, there’s about to be an arrest of some sort. And then it was, ‘Oh my God, it’s Scottie Scheffler,'” Wischusen recounted.
Scheffler was arrested and charged with one felony count of second-degree assault on a police officer and three other misdemeanor charges. Although he was initially scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, his arraignment has been postponed by two weeks.
Scheffler, who described the incident as a “big misunderstanding,” plans to enter a plea of “not guilty.”
