After winning his first major golf championship on May 19, Xander Schauffele shared how his wife, Maya Schauffele, helped him stay grounded and passionate about the sport. Maya, who was emotional during Xander’s victory at the 2024 PGA Championship, expressed her joy to The Athletic, saying she was “blacking out” while watching him secure the win at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
Xander, 30, told PEOPLE that Maya understands his emotional journey and the toll of not winning. “She knows how much not winning has been wearing on me,” he said. “She talks me through a lot of the patient moments and reminds me of why I love playing golf.” He added that her support has been crucial throughout his career.
Xander’s brother, Nico Schauffele, and his uncle, Gao-Ya Chen, were also present during his victory. Nico, who has been cooking for Xander for the past year and a half, joined Maya on the course. Xander reminisced about competing with Nico as kids but emphasized their close bond now. “He supports me and just wants me to succeed,” Xander said, noting Nico’s happiness for his achievement.
Xander’s parents, Stefan and Ping-Yi-Chen Schauffele, celebrated from afar. Stefan, in Hawaii during the tournament, sent Xander an encouraging text before the final round: “Steter tropfen höhlt den stein” (“Steady drip caves a stone”). Xander explained that this was one of his father’s philosophical reminders to stay consistent and steadfast.
After clinching the title, Xander called his father, who was emotional. “I had to hang up quickly to avoid tearing up before receiving the trophy,” he said. He then called his mother in San Diego, who also started crying. Xander decided to catch up with his parents later to manage his emotions.
Reflecting on his family’s support, Xander acknowledged that each member played a unique role in his success. “Everyone’s had a different impact, from my mom to my dad, my brother, and now my wife. They’ve all supported me passionately but in different ways,” he explained.
To celebrate, the family stayed in Kentucky for a night, enjoying the moment and celebrating together. “We took turns drinking out of the trophy and stayed up way too late,” Xander shared, noting it was worth it.
This milestone victory not only marked a significant achievement for Xander but also highlighted the unwavering support of his family, making the triumph a shared celebration.
