One week has passed since World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested before his second round at the PGA Championship, and the charges against him still stand. Scheffler faces four charges, including a felony count of second-degree assault on a police officer. Describing the situation as a “big misunderstanding,” Scheffler initially hoped for a swift dismissal of the charges.
However, with no changes in his legal status, Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, has issued a firm warning to the prosecution. In a statement via ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, Romines declared, “Our position remains the same as it was last Friday. I am not negotiating as we have no interest in settling. I am preparing to litigate as needed and the case will be dismissed or we will go to trial because Scottie did absolutely nothing wrong.”
A significant aspect of the case is that the arresting officer, Bryan Gillis, did not have his body camera activated during the incident. The Louisville Police Department acknowledged this lapse and stated that “corrective action” has been taken against Gillis. On Thursday, the LPD released new footage, but none of it showed any clear misconduct by Scheffler.
Scheffler is scheduled to appear in court on June 3.
