Grayson Murray, PGA Tour Winner, Passes Away at 30. In a sober announcement, the PGA Tour confirmed the passing of two-time winner Grayson Murray on Saturday morning. Murray, who had recently withdrawn from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas due to illness, died unexpectedly at the age of 30.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan released a heartfelt memo to the Tour’s members, expressing the profound sense of loss. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. There is nothing we can do but mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones,” Monahan stated.
After discussions with Murray’s parents, it was decided that the tournament at Colonial would continue. Monahan noted, “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”
Murray’s passing follows his recent victory at the Sony Open, which ended a six-year winless streak. In an interview earlier this year, he expressed optimism about his future, highlighting his rediscovered faith and engagement to Christiana Ritchie, whom he met in 2021. “I wouldn’t trade anything. I have a beautiful fiancée. I have beautiful parents. I have beautiful nephews, siblings. Everyone in my life right now who is close to me, who has been through the struggles with me, it’s all a team effort. I think this is just the start of something really special,” he said.
Despite his successes, Murray had been open about his struggles with mental health, including anxiety, depression, and treatment for alcohol abuse. He was a standout talent, winning the prestigious Junior Worlds three times and making an immediate impact on the PGA Tour by claiming the 2017 Barbasol Championship.
Murray’s journey is a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health and seeking help when needed. As we mourn the loss of this talented golfer, let us remember his words of hope and resilience, cherishing our loved ones and supporting one another in times of need.
