Xander Schauffele revealed that several PGA Tour stars had a lighthearted go at Scottie Scheffler following his unexpected arrest during the PGA Championship. Scheffler’s arrest occurred just before his second round at the tournament. Despite the incident, Scheffler managed to tee off on time and shot an impressive 66, though he later slipped in the rankings with a 73 on Saturday, while Schauffele secured his first major title.
During an appearance on the GOLF Subpar podcast, Schauffele, a close friend of Scheffler, shared his perspective on the unusual events at Valhalla. The PGA Tour players, including Schauffele, naturally made light of the situation involving the two-time Masters winner. “The only thing he hurts is a golf ball and other competitors’ feelings most of the time,” Schauffele told hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz. “But that’s literally the extent of the damage Scottie Scheffler is capable of doing. He’s a solid guy all around. I thought it was a prank.”
Schauffele, along with physio Marnus Marais, and fellow golfers Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, are part of a group chat with Scheffler. After Scheffler’s release, the group humorously referenced the incident. “It was a fun poke,” Schauffele added. “It wasn’t like a mean poke. It was fun. I mean, the mug shot was posted, you know, and then someone changed the name of the group chat, like, ‘Please make it tomorrow, Scottie,’ or something like that.”
Schauffele emphasized that while they joked with Scheffler, they also respected him. “We wanted to be peaceful. And Scottie, when he’s with us, he’s so chill. If our table makes fun of him, he’s fine. But if someone else makes fun of him, we kind of look at them like, ‘You can’t say that.’”
Scheffler faces serious charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. He denies these charges, with his arraignment scheduled for June 3. Reflecting on the arrest, Scheffler noted the kindness of the officers. “The officer that took me to the jail was very kind, he was great. We had a nice chat in the car, that kind of helped calm me down,” Scheffler said. “One older officer, when I was doing my fingerprints, asked if I wanted the full experience and offered me a sandwich since I hadn’t eaten breakfast yet. They were really kind.”
