A humorous incident unfolded at the RBC Canadian Open when a golf fan stepped in to replace Tiger Woods’ former caddie, Mike ‘Fluff’ Cowan, during the final round. Cowan, currently the caddie for CT Pan, was injured on the 3rd hole at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. After falling down a hill on the par-4 3rd, Cowan was unable to continue, though he is reportedly okay.
With no one from Pan’s team available to take over, a fan in the gallery volunteered, donning the caddie bib and shaking hands with Pan on the 3rd green. The new caddie’s debut was somewhat shaky, as he fumbled the putter head cover. Former PGA Tour pro Robert Damron humorously critiqued the fan, suggesting he might need to loosen the straps on the bib.
The fan’s caddie stint was short-lived, as a local caddie replaced him on the 5th hole. By the 9th hole, Pan had his fourth caddie of the day, courtesy of PGA Tour pro Paul Barjon’s caddie. Despite the caddie carousel, the pressure was somewhat alleviated as Pan was already trailing on the leaderboard. However, with every shot counting in the FedEx Cup standings, especially for Pan who is outside the top 100, the situation was not entirely without stakes.
Mike Cowan is best known for caddying for Tiger Woods during his first professional years, including Woods’ landmark 1997 Masters win, where Woods claimed a record 12-shot victory. Cowan and Woods secured eight PGA Tour titles together before parting ways in 1998. Cowan then joined Jim Furyk, while Woods partnered with Steve Williams. One of Cowan’s memorable habits was checking the wind for Woods using his cigarette.
